Home sales in Manatee, Sarasota counties continue strong in April

MANATEE — A month after reaching a seven-year best for existing home and condo sales in Sarasota, the market one-upped itself in April, recording the highest number of sales since August 2005.

Brides Against Breast Cancer boutique opens in Lakewood Ranch

LAKEWOOD RANCH — This year, an estimated 226,870 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Charities around the world have raised funds for prevention, research, education and support. But how many can say they fight breast cancer with wedding gowns?

Brides Against Breast Cancer, a 3,500-square-foot facility opened its doors Wednesday at 6279 Lake Osprey Drive. It serves as administrative headquarters, retail boutique and bridal preparation center.

The nonprofit will feature more than 1,000 bridal gowns in hundreds of styles. The gowns, which come in sizes 0-30, are donated from various companies in the bridal industry.

Manatee’s employment rate improves in April

New monthly figures show Manatee County’s unemployment rate dropped in April to 8 percent. JONATHAN ALCORN — Bloomberg

MANATEE – The unemployment rate in Manatee dropped from 8.7 percent in March to 8 percent in April, state data released today shows.

Sarasota’s jobless rate, however, only inched down by a 10th of a percent from 8.7 percent in March to 8.6 percent in April
