Home Buyers Check Out Local Shopping Centers

DENVER — Home buyers and homeowners near shopping centers should pay close attention to their retail health, says Don Wood, CEO of Federal Realty Investment Trust, which manages investments in malls and shopping centers in South Florida, the Northeast, California and Texas.

Speaking last week at the National Association of Real Estate Editors’ Spring Journalism Conference here, he said healthy, well-managed shopping centers with the right retail tenants can boost neighborhood home values. Before buying close to a shopping center, home shoppers should do “their own due diligence,” Wood said. “If you are near a reputable developer who is truly in it for the long term and not to flip a property, obviously to make money, but also to improve that community, you will see it in home values.”
