Foreclosures jump in Southwest Florida

MANATEE — Southwest Florida’s foreclosure market continued its roller coaster ride in May as more properties fell delinquent but banks kept a tight hold of their release.

Foreclosure starts are picking up again in Manatee and Sarasota counties as lenders work through the logjam of cases created from the fraud probes of 2010, which caused foreclosure activity to essentially freeze.

Condo price recovery showing up

When April home sales figures were released last week for Sarasota, they showed condominium transactions were up 31 percent over the same month in 2011.

At the same time, condo sales prices have jumped 30 percent from their low point early last year.

High-end condos, in particular, have experienced a surge of renewed interest in Southwest Florida, along with other luxury residences.
